As another year comes to a close, it’s customary to take some time to look back on the last 12 months and figure out just exactly what we have learned from ourselves and our world.
In Goodrich, we learned that teacher union contracts can be settled, superintendent issues can be resolved and businesses still eye the village. In Ortonville, we learned that the e-coli issue in Kearsley Creek will not wash away, voters speak clearly in village elections, and DDA projects, while often fruitful, can be painful. In Brandon Township, we learned that a new recreational park should be a community effort, libraries are expensive to operate, and commerical growth is often a challenge, yet needed.
Finally, if we learn anything from the lessons of 2007, let it be that our communities are not in a vacuum, oblivious to worldwide issues. Rather, we endure the same issues from home foreclosures to crime to environmental concerns. We share a family’s grief when they lose a loved one to war, or their joy when a loved one returns home safely.
The education gleaned from 2007 is costly only if we don’t learn the lessons. Let’s have a prosperious 2008.
Our offices are located at 12 South St. in downtown Ortonville, between Brandon Co-op Preschool and the Clarkston Brandon Community Credit Union. We are open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday.
From the staff at The Citizen have a happy and safe New Year.
