The Clarkston girls swim team finished their season on a high note at the state meet this past weekend at the Holland Aquatics Center.? Five swimmers from the team qualified in four different events, and senior Julia Vela advanced to the finals in the 200 Individual Medley.?
‘I was happy with how I did in the 200 IM,? said Vela, ‘I swam my best time, did better than I expected.??
Vela, who finished 14th with a time of 2:12.58, broke the school record by three seconds in the event.’She also individually qualified in the 100 butterfly, but failed to reach the finals with a time of 1:00.04.?
‘The 100 (butterfly) swam really fast this year.’I swam faster than I did last year, and I made it to the finals last year,? she said.
Senior Amber Fullmer also qualified individually, as she finished 21st in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:01.66.’Although the time was not enough to qualify for finals, it was a career best for Fullmer and broke the school record.
The Wolves also had two relays qualify: the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay.? In the 200 medley, Clarkston qualified with a time of 1:57.22, but were disqualified at the race.’In the freestyle relay, Clarkston finished 35th with a time of 1:48.89.’Medley relay were Vela, Fullmer, and freshmen Shawna Mulcahy and Taylor Tekiele.’Freestyle relay consisted of Vela, Mulcahy, Tekiele, and junior Andrea Misteravisch.
‘Both Amber and I have had a great four years together,?’said Vela, ‘and it was great for the freshmen to get the experience at the state meet as well.?
