Goodrich’s varsity hockey team, in its second year under coach Doug Van Kuren, is looking to build upon a successful 2003-04 campaign.
The Martians got off on the right foot Nov. 17, defeating host Flushing 3-0. Senior Brian Van Kuren scored two goals for the Martians, while junior Max Hawkins added one goal and one assist.
Junior goaltender Brad Smith shut out Flushing, stopping 32 shots in the process.
Last year, the Martians went 16-8-2 and finished in second place in their league behind Saginaw Nouvel. Goodrich returns plenty of firepower from that team.
Brian Van Kuren, Hawkins, and Smith are just a few of the key returning players on this year’s team, according to Doug Van Kuren. They are joined by juniors Reece Geml, Steven Tangney, Steven Locke, and Derek James, and sophomores Zach Pernack and Derek Powers.
Newcomers Sean Rollins, Travis Wandell, and Brennen Benedict, all sophomores, have a chance to make solid contributions to this year’s team, Doug Van Kuren said.
