Ubbing: Brandon golfers showed dramatic improvement

The Brandon boys golf team saw a season of solid improvement end at regional action.
The Blackhawks placed sixth out of 16 teams competing at regionals Oct. 8 at Oxford Hills Golf Course, finishing with a team score of 335. However, only the top three teams at each regional move on to state competition.
Flint Powers, Lapeer West, and Fenton earned the top three spots at the Oxford Hills regional to move on to state competition.
Will Hubbard led the Blackhawks at the meet with a round of 80, while Tom Voyer shot 81 and Ryan Bilkos 82.
The Blackhawks ended the season in fifth place in the Flint Metro League after finishing seventh out of seven teams last year. Coach John Ubbing said the Blackhawks just barely missed out finishing in fourth place, which gives the team hope for the future.
‘I think we realized our expectations for this season,? he said. ‘The kids still realize they’re young. It’s nice to end the season like this, but at the same time, you want to start all over again. Our improvement was unbelievable, and hopefully, it will continue.?
As far as offseason work is concerned, Ubbing said he would like to see the members of the team get together whenever they can to get in some time on the course.
‘We encourage them to play as much as possible,? he said.
