What defines Teacher of the Year?
Maybe the efforts of an individual, or their qualifications are the reason. For Heidi Wright and Cheryl Patterson, the answers are obvious.
Heidi Wright is a fifth grade teacher at Pine Knob Elementary. Teaching since 1995, Wright has been involved with many programs including: writing focus group, PKE scholarship committee, school family meeting committee, teacher assistance team facilitator and NCA committee member.
Wright is known for exciting her students with passion and desire. She takes the term classroom and converts it to a family of learning.
‘When I found out I was nominated, I was flattered,? said Wright. ‘All of the teachers work very hard and I didn’t think I did anything above or beyond their efforts.?
Wright is thankful for her recent nomination, and relates the nomination to her favorite part about teaching.
‘My favorite part of teaching is the kids,? said Wright. ‘I love watching them learn and change.?
Cheryl Patterson is the literature and film teacher for juniors at Clarkston High School. Patterson began her teaching career in 1980. She is involved in many academic programs including: after school tutorial, Clarkston Forum, NCA co-chair, Oakland Activities Association and Clarkston High School Adopt-a-Family.
Patterson is known for taking her passion for literature and film and relating to the everyday lives of her students. She demonstrates pure knowledge and understands how to motivate children. Patterson was truly surprised by her nomination.
‘When I heard I was nominated, I emailed the administration because I didn’t feel I was outstanding,? said Patterson. ‘I felt embarrassed to be singled-out, but very happy about being nominated.?
Patterson believes the team of teachers at Clarkston High School are truly outstanding.
‘I believe the staff I work with is unbelievable and I don’t feel I do something more than them,? said Patterson.
The two nominees, Wright and Patterson, are pleased for their nominations and the support of the Clarkston community.
