It was another disappointing week for the varsity girls basketball team as they suffered two more losses against OAA teams.
Troy was not showing the Wildcats any love on Monday, Feb. 14 as they won 50-23 in a non-league contest.
Oxford was hanging with Troy after the first quarter, trailing 6-4. But Troy broke the game open in the second and third quarters, outscoring Oxford 16-5 in the second and 23-11 in the third to take a 45-20 lead heading into the final quarter.
‘Troy made a good run at the end of the second quarter and had another one in the third quarter that we just couldn’t recover from,? head coach Al Poynter said.
Junior Michelle Gilmore led Oxford with 12 points, three rebounds and four steals.
Oxford then battled Birmingham Groves on Thursday, Feb. 17, losing 48-34 in a game that was closer than the score indicated.
‘Tonight was another game where we were close, but we just didn’t get a long-enough scoring run on them to make our defense work for us,? Poynter said.
‘They are a very balanced basketball team and we took their best shot since it was senior night, so I am proud of our team for handling the tough situation and making a game of it,? he added.
With the losses, the Wildcats drop to 3-14 overall, 3-8 in OAA white division play.
This week, they come home to face Avondale on Tuesday, weather permitting, Thursday, Feb. 24 against Southfield and Friday, Feb. 26 against West Bloomfield.
Each game begins at 7 p.m.
