Turning trash into treasure

It’s ‘green.?
It’s unique.
And it’s oh, so trendy.
It’s the merchandise in downtown’s newest shop, The Painted Lady.
Owner and Lake Orion resident Debbie Enright celebrated the opening of her store with Downtown Development Authority (DDA) and village officials during a ribbon cutting, April 23.
‘We’re pretty excited about it. It’s a great retail space and it’s a great business,? said Suzanne Perreault, DDA executive director. ‘I think it will develop a lot of foot traffic.?
All of The Painted Lady’s items are ‘upcycled,? said Enright, who quite literally turns trash into ‘treasures.?
‘My husband, John, does a lot of salvage pieces, like making chalkboards out of old doors,? she said. ‘I have a lot of hand-painted, vintage furniture.?
Even the store’s checkout counter is made from refurbished and repurposed doors.
Perreault predicts ‘a lot of people coming downtown to this store.?
‘It’s really unique and really cool, and I think the ‘upcycled? furniture is popular,? said the DDA director.
Enright says she tries to keep prices low and quality high in her products.
‘It’s affordable ? someone can walk in a buy a piece and not be overwhelmed. I try to find it at a cheap price so I can redo it and sell it at a cheap price,? she said, adding ‘The quality of older items is so much better. We thought, ‘Why not use these???
Enright’s favorite pieces in her store right now are a hand-painted, light blue dress and a set of heart end tables.
‘I really like the chalkboard doors, too,? she said.
To check out these and other unique items, stop by The Painted Lady at 15 E. Flint Street, just east of Broadway.
Enright says she plans to throw a grand opening celebration this weekend now that Earth Day festivities are over.
