Leon Sawyer, who lives on about an acre on Clarkston Road, had an unusual visitor May 29
“A turkey was pacing back and forth, trying to get through my fence,” Sawyer said. “I opened the gate for him and after he came in, I shut it. I got him some feed and I called to him. He answered. He did a turkey trot right up to me and I threw him some feed, cracked corn and sunflower seeds.”
He decided to try to get the bird to come closer, to feed him by hand, which he did.
“I wore a glove ? boy, do they peck hard,” he said. “My daughter-in-law (Carole Sawyer) took some pictures. I fed him one more time then he flew up on the roof and he was gone.”
His son, Bruce Sawyer, a turkey hunter, was dismayed when he heard about it.
“He said it’s hard to call them into range, and I was feeding one by hand,” Leon said. “It was quite a thrill.”
