Brandon Twp. – Township officials say early election signs have prompted plans to amend the township sign ordinance.
‘We’ve already gotten calls from resident asking why the (August primary) election signs are allowed to be posted,? said Ron Lapp, township supervisor.
While Lapp says the school board election signs are not a problem because the elections are less than a months away.
However, the primary election signs already posted for the August primaries and November elections are the issue.
‘People just don’t want to see that stuff for the next six months,? Lapp said, adding while there is no specific time limit within the township ordinance on how far in advance candidates signs can be posted, until this 2004 election there has been a ‘gentleman’s agreement? to only post 30 days before the primary.
As a rule candidates have taken their signs down seven to 10 after the primary and then re-posted them 30 days before the November election.
In order to protect the community from a six month campaign clutter, the board plans to discuss updating the township sign ordinance to included specific time limitations for campaign signs.
Lapp says he expects the board to make a recommendation to the planning commission at the next township meeting, on Monday, May 17.
