Brandon Twp – Township officials say they’ve been patient with property owner John Sloan for more than four years’but finally his time has run out.
On April 18 the township board voted 7-0 awarding Addison Disposal, L.L.C. of Leonard the contract to demolish and remove the home Sloan set out to build on Legault Boulevard more than four years ago.
‘The township board has Ok’d a bid for demolition,? said Ron Lapp, township supervisor. ‘We have some additional legal steps we are going to take right now. It’s been four years and more than $9,000 just in legal fees alone.?
Lapp added that costs could exceed $25,000 by the time the project is completed.
‘The next step will be to foreclose and sell the property to recoup township money. As a township we argued against Sloan’s extensions to complete the project. We’re not excited about this process but people need to follow through under the ordinances.?
The board approved the $10,350 bid however no date has been set for execution of the court approved teardown.
The four year saga of Sloan’s rather dilapidated buildings started when several township neighbors appealed to the township to clean up or complete the construction process.
Cleaning up the three acre property surrounding the home is imperative, say officials both for safety reasons and removing the mess so neighbors no longer have to look at it.
Sloan has battled the township in court asking for several extensions. Sloan was met with opposition from the township, however he was allotted more than two additional years to complete the home structure.
After five court cases and six building extensions the township board voted to honor an April court order to remove the half built home and the surrounding debris.
