Atlas Twp.- On Jan. 20, the township board of trustees moved forward on two grant requests from Homeland Security funding that has been allocated to Genesee County.
A total of $93,484 has been provided to Genesee County through the Region 3 Homeland Security Planning Board for projects’the funds will be divided up among communities within the county. The projects are submitted to the Office of Genesee County Sheriff and it’s recommended that due to the low amount of funding communities only request a portion of the necessary funding to complete their projects.
Shirley Kautman-Jones, township supervisor, suggested a tornado siren to be located near Irish and Jordan roads and a four inch water well for the fire department located in the area of Maple and Henderson roads.
‘The well should be located near the Davison Township border where we are underserved with regard to water supplies for fires,? said Jones. ‘The location could be shared with Davison and possibly the costs associated with the installation.?
The cost on the well is estimated at $25,000 with a portion coming from Homeland Security and the township. Similarly, the township will also look for about $19,000 for a third tornado siren.
