The Orion Senior Center will soon bring in not one, but three big headlining acts as part of their first-ever Fall Concert.
Danny & the Juniors, Charley Thomas and the Drifters, and The Vogues will all perform in two shows at Lake Orion High School’s Performing Arts Center on Sept. 16.
‘It’s my understanding that our area has never had a concert of this magnitude,? said Senior Center Coordinator of Fundraising Bill Kokenos. For that reason, Kokenos expects tickets to go extremely fast, even with six months to go before the shows.
‘We’re expecting to sell out both shows,? he added.
Planning for the concert has been ongoing since last Aug., and was approved by the Township Board in Nov.
Proceeds from the event will go to the enrichment and establishment of programs at the Senior Center, which hopes the concert will become an annual event.
A unique bonus for concertgoers is a ‘meet & greet,? in which people can meet with their favorite groups and get autographs.
‘They’ll also have pictures and CDs to purchase,? Kokenos noted.
The Senior Center is also excited about hosting the event at the Performing Arts Center, where the audience will be unusually close to the performers.
‘People will get a chance to see just how good this auditorium is,? Kokenos said.
The concert is being put on in partnership with Classic Productions, Inc., and offers a look at Rock ‘n Roll the way it was meant to be.
The doo-wop group Charley Thomas and the Drifters have timeless hits that include ‘Under the Boardwalk,? ‘This Magic Moment? and ‘Some Kind of Wonderful.? In ‘At The Hop,? Danny & the Juniors have a hit that reached number one on the pop, country, and rhythm and blues charts.
The Vogues recorded numerous hits of their own, including ‘Five O’clock World,? ‘Turn Around Look at Me,? and ‘You’re the One.? There is certainly no slouch in the bunch, thus the need for two shows on Sept. 16 (one at 4 p.m. and the other at 8 p.m.).
‘The community has been very cooperative in helping with this,? said Kokenos, who noted the many ideas and comments the Senior Center has received since announcing concert plans.
The Senior Center is still looking for sponsorships from area businesses and has a variety of ‘Rock ‘n Roll Sponsorships? to choose from.
In addition to advertising in the event program, some sponsorship packages include display and table advertising at the event, tickets to the performance and a special VIP meet and greet session. Besides the standard single ticket purchases (which range from $25 to $45), the Senior Center will also accommodate large groups and is working on providing bus transportation at minimal cost.
