? Change of guard in top board post: After ten years of service, Janet Thomas has been replaced as Clarkston Board of Education president.
The board unanimously approved John Needham as president of the board, effective immediately.
The move was initiated by Thomas, who quickly nominated Needham for the position when it cam time for election of officers July 9. The board is required to reelect officers at the start of each school year.
‘Big band music in free concert: Ice cream and lemonade will be sold during the free concert in Clarkston’s Depot Park Friday, July 13.
The 14-piece Executives will be playing romantic, nostalgic music with big band theme songs from Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Les Brown and more.

25 YEARS AGO (1980)
‘Layoffs loom for township employees: Economists call it the ripple effect. It refers to dropping a stone into a body of water and the results waves that grow wider and wider.
At the center of the present situation is the state of the economy, and one of the latest victims of the broadening waves is Independence Township government employees.
Layoffs for township government employees are expected to continue in light of state shared revenue budget cuts, according to Christopher Rose, township clerk.
50 YEARS AGO (1955)
‘Goodwill Trucks Here Monday: Two-thirds of all materials collected at Goodwill Industries are picked up during the one-third of the year devoted to spring house-cleaning. Although this creates a great deal of activity in the Goodwill workshops, during these few months, it also means that Goodwill Industries is hard pressed to keep all of their employees working full time during the balance of the year.
? Industrial Picnic Held Saturday: One of the largest industrial picnics in Michigan-GMC Truck and Coach Division’s annual summer outing-will be staged Saturday, July 15, at Walled lake Amusement Park.
More than 30,000 GMC employes and their families are expected to attend the fun-studded event.

15 YEARS AGO (1990)
? Clarkston in formula once again: State aid legislation expected to be signed by Gov. Blanchard this week could result in another ‘in formula? year for Clarkston.
The legislation transfers about $50 million in state money usually granted to richer districts and redistributes it to poor districts.
The move ensures $90 per local mill of a district’s operating millage-plus up to $335 per pupil. One mill is $1 for every $1000 assessed property valuation.
‘Free concert features banjos, popcorn, model: Back by popular demand, the Auto City Banjos are to perform in the third concert in Depot Park Friday July 20.
The concert, at 7-9 P.M.. in the park in downtown Clarkston, features old standards: early 1900s music, country-western, polkas and festival music.

25 YEARS AGO (1980)
? Parents charge CJHS with mishandling injury: Charging inadequate maintenance of Clarkston Junior High School and dismay with the way the situation was handled, Robert and Sue Moshier asked the Clarkston Board of Education for reimbursement of expenses not covered by insurance when their son received an electrical shock at the school May 27.
The board discussed the incident at Monday night’s meeting, but took no action.
‘Republicans to host candidates night: Independence Township voters will have a chance to meet the Republican candidates and hear them speak Wednesday, July 23.
The free event is sponsored by the Independce Township Republican Club.
50 YEARS AGO (1955)
‘Rotarians Visit Haiti and Jamaica: On Monday evening the Clarkston Rotary Club went on a picture trip to Haiti and Jamaica. Fred Warrick, who with Mrs. Warrick and their daughter, Carolyn, and son, Fred, visited these islands to the south, last spring, showed colored slides and described the cities, the people, their manners and mode of living. He told of their hospitality and their leisurely way of doing things. They do not rush like Americans do, but they take the time to enjoy every minute of the day and night. It was an interesting trip. The Warricks drove south going by the way of Louisiana and around the Gulf. They flew to the islands from Miami.

15 YEARS AGO (1990)
? 3 suspects in CHS fire: By the end of the day Wednesday, May 2, Clarkston School officials and the Oakland County arson squad should be ready to divulge the identity of the person responsible for the April 23 fire at the high school.
As of Monday, April 30, CHS Principal Robert Burek reported that the list of suspects had been narrowed down to three. Interviewing sessions with suspects have been conducted since Friday, April 27.
? Three CHS seniors injured in spring break crash: On Sunday, April 22, three Clarkston High School seniors were hospitalized after their car crashed on their way home from a spring break excursion.
Todd Bennett, Guy Kennedy and Mark Powers, all 18, were returning home from a vacation at Myrtle Beach, S.C. when the accident occurred. According to Sue Benett, Todd’s mother, the three teens were traveling northbound on U.S. 23 in Ohio when an elderly couple pulled out onto the highway in front of them.

? ‘Wonderful World of Pine Knob? rides high with commission’s okay: ‘The Wonderful World of Pine Knob? received the go-ahead from the Independence Township Planning Commission last week.
Co-owners of Pine Knob Investment, Gary Francell and Joseph Locricchio, received final site plan approval for the 12-ride amusement park on 2.5 acres in a 4-2 vote April 24.
50 YEARS AGO (1955)
‘Township Responds to Cancer Fund: Independence Township opened its heart and its purse last week and gave the gratifying sum of $1,536.77 to help in the fight against cancer. April was the month chosen by the American Cancer Society for its drive to raise funds and to teach sound facts about this disease through free literature, films, speakers, radio and TV, posters and programs.
‘Vaccine Clinics Running Smoothly: Polio vaccine clinics around the state are running smoothly, according to the Michigan Department of Health.
State Health Commissioner, Dr. Albert E. Heustis gives praise to private physicians and local health departments ‘for an outstanding job.?
‘Local Club Has Window Display: In observance of National Home Demonstration Week the Clarkston group has arranged a window display in Kelley’s Hardware. The display shows just one item from one of the organization’s interesting lessons, ‘Sewing New Fabrics.?
