The worst is past

Clarkston wrestling has not had the most pleasant season thus far, but a recent strong showing at the Portage Northern Tournament coupled with two league wins in the past week helps with the pain.
The Wolves posted a third place finish at Portage on Jan. 29 and defeated Troy Athens (55-12) and Rochester (45-26) on Jan. 26.
‘We are turning the corner,? said Clarkston Coach Joe DeGain. ‘We still have two and a half weeks until districts and we are just trying to get our ducks in a row leading up to that.?
The Wolves pinned six of Troy Athens? combatants and won 11 of the 14 matches. While Clarkston did not dominate Rochester in the same manner, the Wolves still won nine matches, pinning two.
The dual meet victories have brought Clarkston’s league record to 2-2, the team is 5-9 overall. The Wolves take on another tough league opponent in Avondale on Feb. 2.
‘To win the league, we need a situation where everybody beats everybody,? said DeGain.
All of Clarkston’s wrestlers placed at Portage. While no one staked claim to their division the Wolves did have four second place finishers: Mitch Miller (135 pounds), Bryant Kraft (140), Braden L’Amoreaux (145) and Josh McAllister (160).
After the Avondale dual, Clarkston’s next action will come at the League meet on Feb. 11.
