Ortonville- The Ortonville Masonic Lodge #339 recently awarded three scholarships to Brandon High School students for their scholastic achievements and contributions to the community.
Last week Brandon High School Seniors, Katy Lawson, Sherri Lawrence and Amanda Grix were each awarded a $500 Masonic Scholarship.
The education program is funded through area events including a pancake breakfast during ‘SeptemberFest,? a spaghetti dinner in October and a Swiss steak dinner from 4-8 p.m. today at the Ortonville Masonic Temple, 21 South St., Ortonville.
In addition to the fundraisers, the Ortonville Masons assist with the Michigan Child Identification Program (MCHIP), a comprehensive child recovery and identification procedure.
Chartered Jan. 24, 1877, the Ortonville Masons have gathered at the current location, 21 South St. since 1910, and include about 100 members today.
‘The building is just about 100-years-old and we believe was constructed by the brothers of the lodge,? said Henry Lozier, a Mason for 25 years and current lodge treasurer. ‘The blocks for the building were formed right here on site too.?
‘We stay very active in the community and give back where ever possible. The Masons have a long history and tradition in this county’including several presidents.?
According to historical accounts, Benjamin Franklin, and many of the Founding Fathers including George Washington, Paul Revere, Joseph Warren, and John Hancock, were Masons.
