Atlas Twp.-Just before the noon lunch rush, Charlie Burt ran out of lettuce used to construct one of his classic sandwiches.
‘I went out to the garden and cut some lettuce from our garden,? said Burt, a 2008 Goodrich High School graduate. ‘Can’t get much fresher’it’s harvested from the field to sandwich.?
Burt is the founder of The Honeycrisp Cafe, located at Porter’s Orchard, 12060 E. Hegel Road, Goodrich. The takeout eatery opened earlier this month and showcases not only Michigan products, but also some uncommon taste creations.
‘I’ve worked at Porter’s Orchard for many years and help raise the finest produce and now use that knowledge creating a menu,? he said. ‘The produce store is just out back here at Porter’s’you’ll really taste the difference.?
Burt’s menu features an Orchard Turkey sandwich with a feta cheese spread and a kale slaw salad with a ‘kick,? adds Burt.
‘Our peanut butter and apple sandwich is far from common, too,? he said. ‘The honey used in the sandwich creation comes from out back of the farm. If wild thistle is growing, or apples are in blossom, the honey will have a taste to reflect that.?
From Alma Hill Bread Company, Lapeer, to A Bean to Go Coffee, Goodrich, to Pennell Farms, Vassar, for produce, Burt has created a menu that features not only organic produce, but a handful of signature creations. Other local products include hand ground St. Laurent Peanut Butter from Bay City used to top the After School Special PB&J.
‘We have gathered the very best local products and put Michigan first,? he added. ‘It’s all gluten and MSG free’served hot or cold our sandwiches and salads will open up your taste buds to some new experiences.?
