The holiday season is a time to be merry, but also calls for caution, warns Oakland County Sheriff’s Sergeant Chris Miller.
This is the time for many “crimes of opportunity,” which means thieves are looking for easy targets or things to steal, Miller said.
“People need to be especially cautious right now,” he said. “Keep safety in mind too.”
No matter what time of year it is, always be aware of your surroundings, cautious of your safety, and protective of your belongings. Be careful when you are out shopping or at public places.
“Don’t leave your valuables, such as a purse, on top of your car when your loading up after shopping,” Miller said. “Don’t leave cars unlocked with presents, purses or items visible.”
Keep your car locked at all times. Be careful in the store too, he said.
“Don’t leave valuables, such as purses or wallets in unattended carts,” Miller said. “Keep those items with you at all times.”
President and CEO of Clarkston Brandon Community Credit Union Donna Bullard said if someone finds an ATM card or money left in the ATM, it can be turned in to the institution. The bank has methods to track the transaction and contact the card owner.
“We have people that turn in money they find around the bank. We put it in an envelope with contact information for who found it. In a month if no one claims it, we give it to the person who found it,” Bullard said.
