Every student who loves to write dreams of being a published author some day.
Now, first-graders at Clear Lake Elementary will be able to see their name, and stories, in print.
Next week’s edition of the Leader will feature a special section titled Small Moments, which was written by the Clear Lake students as part of their yearly writing unit.
First-graders in Debbie Morse, Vicki Haviaras, Sara Powrie and Elizabeth Nowakowski’s classes learned how to write poetry, non-fiction and personal journal writing, but nothing compared to their Small Moments unit.
‘It’s easiest for them to tell about the little stories in their lives,? Morse said. ‘It doesn’t have to be this huge story about going to Disneyland.?
Each student had to picture their small moments, draw a picture so they could remember it and then write a story about it.
Some wrote about leaving little notes in their dad’s suitcase before a big trip, while others wrote about riding a horse.
‘I love writing because there are lots of stories in your mind that you can write about,? said one student named Isabella.
Morse said this writing unit was ‘powerful? because now the students think of themselves as published authors.
‘I just think that feeling of being a great writer will be carried with them through their education,? she said.
