Sweet reads, tasty treats

Oprah’s got one. Now Debbie Meyers, co-owner of the Sweet & Savory Bake Shop, does too.
A thriving talk show? Nah ? a book club. But not just any book club. This one’s for business lovers.
Starting February 1, the first meeting of Meyer’s Business Lovers Book Club will take place at the bake shop with discussions on how local business owners and managers can grow.
Meyers has been a business owner for three years now and said ‘there’s always something to learn.?
‘What better way than to talk to the people who are doing the same thing I’m doing?? she said.
Meyers got the idea for the business book club after reading about someone else’s club in Entrepreneur Inc. Magazine.
Meyers said the Business Lovers Book Club will focus on books involving how to grow as a person and as a business at the same time. Not ‘hardcore, boring business facts.?
‘I figure, if we discuss it, than it becomes more real,? Meyers said. ‘Whether it’s the principals of business or customer service, there are so many angles and aspects to business.?
The book club will meet the first Wednesday of every month in the ‘casual? and ‘non-intimidating? bake shop.
Members are asked to bring six books they’ve read or would like to read. The group will then vote as to which six books will be read the first six months.
Meyers will provide tea, coffee and sweets during the meetings and is looking for about 12-20 members.
Already signed up for the club are Victoria’s Delights, The White Horse Inn and officials from the Village of Oxford.
But not every member has to be from Oxford. Meyers encourages business owners from Lake Orion and Metamora business owners to join as well.
‘There’s information (in the books) from all over the country that I think applies to people’s (businesses) wherever they live,? Meyers said.
The success of the Sweet & Savory Bake Shop, Meyers said, can be attributed to business books and personal growth books.
‘They enabled me to take the jump and take that risk,? she said. ‘We’re striving and we’re growing and I feel successful in what we’re doing, but I know there’s a lot I can learn.?
The Business Lovers Book Club will take place at the Sweet & Savory Shop (9 S. Washington St.) in downtown Oxford from 7 to 9 p.m. Call (248) 628-4210 to reserve a spot or just drop in.
