In a battle of Flint Metro League girls basketball contenders, it was the Swartz Creek Dragons that stepped up in the fourth quarter for the win against Brandon.
The Dragons broke away from the Blackhawks in the fourth quarter, outscoring Brandon 18-11 for a 45-38 victory Oct. 24 at Brandon. With the win, Swartz Creek moved into a first-place tie with Fenton for the Flint Metro lead at 10-2, with the Blackhawks one game behind at 9-3.
Brandon had tied the Dragons at 27 at the end of the third quarter, after Swartz Creek had taken a 19-14 lead at halftime.
Before the game, Brandon coach Bryan Ray said Swartz Creek senior Julia Kelley was a player the Blackhawks had to keep an eye on. Kelley lived up to her billing, scoring 15 points to lead the Dragons.
Savannah Stedman led the Blackhawks with 11 points, while Kate Haas and Danielle Kwasiborski added six points each.
