Superintendent apologizes to Leonard school, community

One of my responsibilities as superintendent of Oxford Community Schools is to take appropriate action and provide suitable responses to parental concerns. Responding to Mrs. Vermander’s letter to the editor in the Aug. 19 issue of the Oxford Leader, I want everyone in our community to know that we are very proud of Leonard Elementary School and its accomplishments as a Golden Apple Award winner, Michigan Blue Ribbon Exemplary School Award winner, and an Emerald Award winner. Leonard Elementary was one of only two schools to receive mention in the Blue Ribbon schools article and one of three schools in the Michigan Green Schools article. It is indeed one of our shining points of pride.
The Oakland Press supplement about Oxford Community Schools was not paid for by tax payer dollars. It was paid for by local businesses and vendors of the school district. Overall, we believe the supplement was well done and we’ve had some very positive feedback. The district will publish another supplement in October in the Sherman Publications? papers. However, with that said, I want to apologize for the unintentional exclusion of Leonard Elementary School being listed as one of our schools. This was an oversight that should not have occurred. There is no excuse for this oversight. We value Leonard Elementary School equally to our other seven schools in the District. Leonard Elementary School provides an excellent education for our students.
Please know our goal is to promote all of our schools and to inform readers about the many positive endeavors of our school district, its students, staff, and families.
Therefore, accuracy is always a priority, and we will make an extra effort to ensure that we do not have any omissions in the future. I hope the Leonard Community and school family will accept my sincere apology.

William C. Skilling, Superintendent
