Brandon Twp.- You don’t need to be a fan of insects to enjoy catching the reading bug.
Fran Runnells, head of youth services at the library, 304 South St., has planned a series of events for this year’s summer reading program, the theme of which is ‘Catch the Reading Bug!?
‘It’s a lot of fun,? said Runnells of the program, which runs for eight weeks, from June 23-Aug. 18. ‘It keeps the kids excited about book and reading and improves their skills and comprehension.?
Children entering first through sixth grades are eligible for the program, in which they log the amount of time they spend reading this summer. Librarians record the time and prizes are given, including for children who are read to by parents or siblings.
Additionally, every Wednesday beginning June 25 is a show or event that begins at 10:30 a.m. and is open to registered participants in the program. These events include ‘Animal Encounters? on June 25, in which a handler will bring tarantulas, cockroaches, and reptiles; ‘Bee Lady? on July 16; ‘Baffling Bill the Magician? on July 23 and the grand finale, the annual hot dog talent show luncheon, on Aug. 13.
‘There are typically 100 kids in the program,? Runnells said. ‘It’s hopping on Wednesdays, so if you want a quiet place, it’s probably not here from 10:30-11:30 on Wednesdays.?
Space is limited for the free program, and registration is required.
