Summer is perfect-to-the-‘tea? for reading

The Orion Senior Center celebrated the end of its Seasoned Reader Summer Reading Club with a high tea. Seniors joined fellow readers at the center for a full tea spread and music from Mackinac Island’s Grand Hotel.
The center partnered with the Orion Township Public Library to host the club and tea.
‘It’s just a way we can recognize people who joined the summer reading club,? said Community Programs Director Lisa Sokol.
Reading Club winners Jane Devlin, 65, Pat Elliott, 95, and Diane Holmquist, 58, were also honored at the tea. The women read 40, 35 and 30 books, respectively.
‘I always enjoyed reading,? said Devlin, who enjoys science fiction the best.
Elliott said she’s been reading her whole life.
‘I lived on a farm, books were my friends,? she said. ‘I’m never bored with a book.?
Holmquist says she enjoys adventure and thriller books, along with some romances.
‘The program gave more incentive to read,? she said. ‘It makes you feel like you belong. We have a lot in common, no matter what your age.?
For the tea, guests brought their own tea cups. Elliott showed off one of her hand-painted cups and saucers, carefully decorated with delicate pink roses. The avid reader used to paint fine china in earlier years and has a full dining set of them.
