Summer camp for the Oxford Early Learning Center, located at 105 Pontiac Street, is now open for enrollment.
The camp is from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mon thru Fri starting June 17 through Aug. 23 with the exception of July 4-5. The camp accepts children 6 weeks to 12-years-old. A $45 per child application fee, which is non-refundable, will hold space for your child. A full day is more than six hours and half day is less than six hours.
Prices for infants/toddlers is $245 per week for a full day or $150 per week for a half day; preschool age is $235 per week for full day, $135 per week for half day; School age (K-5) is $175 per week for a full day and $125 per week for a half day. For a given schedule and a minimum of two days a week cost would be $20 a month. For drop-in for a full day only it would be $50, but pre-registration is required.
‘To be in a school environment in the summer kind of seems like a drag,? said Sue Roeher of OELC. ‘But we’re not going to let that happen.?
Camp involves free weekly field trips to Lapeer Skating Center, Tozewski Water Park in Lapeer, KOA Campground, Go! Cache & Go! Bike, Airtime Trampoline and Game Park, as well as ‘on-site? field trips like Home Depot, Archery and Field Day.
Being a part of Oxford Community Schools, Roeher said they do understand the IB (International Baccalaureate) curriculum and will have classes to help students keep up on those concepts.
New to the camp this year are art class, where students will learn sewing, pottery, beading and painting; language class of Chinese-IB and Spanish-IB; gardening class where kids will learn about horticulture such as taking care of the earth, IB Learner Profile, learn about different plans and how to take care of them and the gift of giving.
There will also be a cooking class where students will do math standards, etiquette class, developing a menu, operating a business and science standards. In photography class students will learn how to use a camera, the components of a camera, how to take photos and the appreciation of art.
‘All of these activities are new, with no extra costs to the parents,? Roeher noted.
There will also be a game room with air hockey table, bubble hockey, foosball and Dance, Dance Revolution where 20 kids can play at a time.?
There will also be gaming days where kids can play X-Box, Nintendo Wii and other games.
‘It’s super exciting,? Roeher said. ‘The kids are going to be super-geeked to be here.?
But they aren’t the only ones.
‘The staff is actually super-excited too,? she added. ‘We actually are going to have to play ‘rock, paper, scissors? to see who gets to work this summer because we’re overstaffed.?
Other new things include hockey sticks and lacrosse sticks to play with.
‘It’s their summer,? she added. ‘I would hate to think we were doing a disservice by not providing things that would entertain them. I try to think of the things my (10-year-old) son would be doing if he were at home with his buddies hanging out.?
