The varsity cheerleaders got off to a strong start in 2011 with top three finishes in the first two events of the year.
Oxford was able to pull off a second place finish in their first ever Oakland Activities Association competition on Monday, Jan. 10, finishing with a three round score of 673.6982. North Farmington won the competition with a score of 689.0911.
‘The goal we set for our league is to finish top two, and we are right on track,? cheer co-coach Shari Russell said.
The Wildcats posted scores of 203.0 in round one, 192.398 in round two and a 278.3 in round three.
‘Up until this point we have been creating and modifying our rounds. Now we feel like we can focus on perfecting them,? Russell said.
On Saturday Jan 8, Oxford High School hosted the Mardi Gras Mambo Invite, and the girls didn’t disappointed Wildcat fans, finishing third behind champion Rochester Adams and North Farmington.
The Wildcats finished with 649.332 points, trailing North Farmington for second by under three points.
Rochester Adams won the event, totalling 686.6032 points over three rounds.
‘Knowing how close we have come to first has motivated the team even more than before. We’ll be focusing on our excitement level and wow factor, as well as perfecting our skills and team coordination,? Russell said.
Up next for the cheer squad is the second OAA white competition, held at OHS on Wednesday, Dec. 19 beginning at 6 p.m.
