Last Thursday, the Oxford varsity volleyball team advanced to the championship round of the first Flint Metro League Tournament after they defeated Brandon.
Both the Wildcats and the Blackhawks entered the tournament tied for second place.
Oxford took three matches to come out on top, winning 25-23, 25-16 and 25-21.
Coach Kristi McDevitt said their game plan against Brandon was perfectly executed.
‘Our game plan was to shut down their big hitter and take total advantage of their team offensively when she was in the back row,? she said. ‘We came together for this game and played our best volleyball of the season so far, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.?
Sophomore Britanny Moncrieff had 15 kills and 27 digs, senior captain Kaitlin DuCharme had 13 kills, 14 digs and 20 assists, and senior captain Elizabeth Hazelwood had 9 kills, 14 digs and 20 assists.
On defense, seniors Kaity Fischer and Amanda Jolly and junior Jacqui Sylva combined for 60 digs.
‘As a team, we gave their offense a real challenge to put the ball down and score some points,? McDevitt said.
Oxford will travel to Fenton on Thursday for the league tournament championship, where they hope to win the FML tournament that will take them to districts.
