Spikers served by Knights

While they fought valiantly for two games, Clarkston’s volleyball team folded late as the Lahser Knight prevailed in the CHS gym, winning 4-1 on Feb. 2.
Clarkston led early in the first game, but the Knights came back to win 25-22. The Wolves never surrendered the lead in the second game, winning 25-20. Something happened in between the second and third games as Clarkston lost the next two segments, 25-16 and 25-13, and the match.
‘I guess if you are going to turn it on, it’s better to do it at the end of the season,? said Lahser Coach Danielle Davidson, whose team is now 1-7 in the league.
Clarkston’s league record stands at 1-8 following the loss. To make up for their lack of height, Clarkston Coach Kelly Avenall recently changed strategy for the last bit of the season.
‘I changed my offense, I’m going with two setters now instead of one. It seemed to look better on (Jan. 30), today it didn’t look as good. I’m going to stick with that because I really think that was one of the things we needed to change. It gives us a bigger blocker up front,? Avenall said.
Julliann Gillespie led Clarkston with nine kills and Laura Kupe added eight kills against Lahser.
Clarkston has three matches and two tournaments left before districts.
‘I am just going to play with some different lineups and look at some different combinations,? Avenall said.
Clarkston hosts Seaholm on Feb. 9 then travels to the Saginaw Valley State Invite on Feb. 11. On Feb. 13, the Wolves play their final home game of the year against Groves. The regular season wraps up with a rematch at Lahser on Feb. 16 then at the Andover Invite on Feb. 25.
