The Oxford Varsity volleyball team continued their Flint Metro League winning streak last week, after taking on two other undefeated teams in the league, the Brandon BlackHawks and the Lapeer East Eagles.
The Wildcats traveled to Brandon last Tuesday and defeated them in three games, 25-15, 25-19, 25-19.
Junior captain Brittany Moncrieff had 14 kills and 13 digs. Senior captain Karlyn Stroope finished with 14 kills, senior Kelsey Girardot had 7 kills and 14, and senior captain Jacqui Sylva had 2 kills, 20 digs and was 12 of 13 passing.
On defense, sophomore Taylor Carpenter had 10 digs, Sylva 20 digs, senior Morgan Stefanski 9 digs, and then Girardot and Moncrieff with over 10 digs each. Senior captain Laura Brown had 19 kill assists.
It was another tough game on Thursday night, when Oxford hosted Lapeer East, the last unbeaten team standing in the way of Oxford’s league title.
‘I am always leery when we play East, they have a very strong program and good coach, so I never take them lightly,? Coach Kristi McDevitt said.
The Wildcats handed the first game to East 19-25. The loss was a wake-up call to the Wildcats and the girls focused on the task at hand. In the next three games, Oxford used it’s defense, blocking, passing, and hitting to put the Eagles away 25-19, 25-20, and 25-20.
Stroope had 21 kills and 5 blocks and Moncrieff had 17 kills, 10 digs, and 2 blocks. Girardot (5 blocks), senior Rachael Precour (3 blocks), and Alexandra Johnson (2 blocks) all stepped up to the net huge tonight.
‘The girls are really starting to come together and mesh on the court using all of their skills to the best of their ability,? McDevitt said. ‘We have to continue to do this in the league tournament and in districts to achieve all of our goals.?
The Wildcats are now 6-0 in the league, the lone unbeaten team, and 17-5-2 overall. Oxford will host Linden on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
