The Oxford varsity girls softball team was pumped to compete at the 3rd Annual Jill Milosch Memorial Tournament over the weekend, but ended the weekend with three losses and two injuries.
Game one against Utica Ford saw junior Sarah Paszko score one run and 2 RBI’s off of a home run. Junior Nicole Laidlaw and freshman Chelsea Kessler were 1 for 3 and junior captain Lauren LaCroix was 2 for 4 with one run scored.
Although the girls lost 3-7, coach Sue Roeher said it was a ‘much improved team effort after two weeks of sub-par performances.?
But game two against Goodrich quickly changed the outlook for the Lady Cats after freshman first baseman Corinne Luxton took a line drive to the shin, putting her out for the rest of the day.
Oxford lost to Goodrich 2-15.
In game three against Marlette, Oxford didn’t score any runs and ended the game with a 0-3 loss.
In the top of the first inning, pain struck the Wildcats again when freshman Allie Laidlaw tried to cover a steal on second. The Marlette player slid into Laidlaw’s left wrist causing a possible serious injury.
‘It seemed that we were on the up-swing, but with two key injuries our fate is yet to be determined by our less experienced players,? Roeher said.
The Lady Cat’s recouped and took on Clarkston Monday night, but lost both games 1-10 and 4-16.
Luxton recovered from her weekend injury and pitched in game two, which also saw a lot of action from Kessler, junior Breanna May, LaCroix and junior Sarah Paszko.
The Lady Cat’s are now 9-23 overall and 2-10 in the FML. They travel to Troy Athens for a 4 p.m. game tonight.
