The varsity girls softball team finally got off the schneid and earned their first victory of the season in game two of a doubleheader against Birmingham Seaholm on Monday, May 2.
Oxford won a wild 16-11 game which saw the Wildcats take a 4-0 lead only to trail 11-10 in the top of the seventh inning.
Their bats came alive again, scoring six runs in the inning as Oxford sent nine batters to the plate and held on to help freshman Kyla Kurczewski earn her first ever varsity victory as a starting pitcher.
During the game, Kurczewski only allowed 12 hits while striking out two and walking three. Sophomore Autumn Cervantez and freshman Alyson Edgemon each went three for five with three runs scored, while Edgemon drove in four runs.
Amanda Boyer went three for five with three RBIs, while scoring once.
In the first game, the Wildcats lost 6-4. Cervantez picked off two Seaholm runners, while juniors Cassie Edgemon and Hannah Rogers both had doubles and an RBI.
On Thursday, April 28, the Wildcats would struggle against Lake Orion, losing game one of the double header 16-1 and game two 13-1.
According to varsity head coach Kristi McDevitt, the Wildcats committed five errors in the first game against the Dragons, which led to 14 unearned runs.
‘Our defense was off-kilter against Lake Orion and we were committing errors on routine plays, which is uncharacteristic for us,? McDevitt said. ‘If we take away those unearned runs, we have a different ballgame.?
In game two, the Dragons were too much for the Wildcats to handle as they were limited to only four hits in five innings.
Oxford currently sits at 1-9 overall. They travel to West Bloomfield on Wednesday, May 4.
