While navigating through a regular season fraught with learning experiences derived from many tough opponents and losses, the Clarkston baseball team finished on an positive note ? getting their first shutout of the year against North Farmington, 5-0 on May 25.
All things being equal once again now that the district tournament has arrived, Clarkston Coach Don Peters likes his team’s chances.
‘The girls have been in a lot of tournaments. It’s a different feeling, getting ready for districts ? it’s possible we can win (the district tournament),? said Peters.
The Wolves will match up against Waterford Mott at the Clarkston softball field on June 4 at 10:30 a.m. in the opening round of districts, which due to Pontiac Central’s ineligibility this year will also be a semifinal game. Should Clarkston advance they will face the winner of the Waterford Kettering and Pontiac Northern tilt, later in the day.
Looking back on his team’s 10-21 season, Peters feels the foundation has been laid for success for the Wolves next season and beyond. This year’s iteration lacked any seniors and at times started several freshmen.
‘With health and experience, all of the things which went wrong for us this year should go right next year,? said Peters.
According to Peters, Junior Katy Kleinedler provided leadership for the Wolves, both behind the plate from the catcher position and with a bat in her hand. Peters also raved about Junior Megan Sperry, who pitched the shutout of North Farmington, who also displayed tact at the plate and speed on the base paths. Peters also felt freshman Katie Smith was described as ‘coming around offensively and defensively? as the season progressed and learned a great deal from Kleinedler.
