The Oxford varsity girls softball team may have opened their 2006 season with two losses, but they’re ready to get on the winning streak as soon as possible.
The team of 12 girls includes seniors Jamie Badia, Mary Bono, Lyndsay Nieman and Tiffany West, which will be a great asset to the team’s strength.
Last year, the Lady Cats tied for second in the Flint Metro League and will strive this year to be number one.
Coach Sue Roeher said with Fenton being their biggest rival, the girls ‘need defense to be their strong point.?
‘I’m looking for big things out of sophomore pitcher Kelsey Oliver and junior Amanda Jolly on second base,? she said.
Last Thursday, the Lady Cats took on Waterford Mott, but lost 5-9.
Third baseman Kelsey Oliver went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while outfielder Jamie Badia went 1-for-2 and scored one with 1 RBI. Tiffany West pitched all seven innings.
Friday’s game against Waterford Kettering was suspended due to darkness and ended with a final score of 0-5.
Badia and Lauren Lacroix both went 1-for-3 and Sarah Mersino went 1-for-2 , but were unable to score. Mersino pitched for the two innings played.
Although the Lady Cats lost their season opener, Coach Roeher said it will be a learning experience for the girls.
‘It was nice to be outside in the dirt and get some game experience under our belt,? she said.
The Lady Cats will take on Rochester Adams High School on Thursday and Flint Kearsley High School on Monday on their own turf.
