Singing, dancing and Nazis

Oxford High School will soon be alive with the sound of Music.
Building off of last’s year’s highly successful performance of Annie, OHS proudly presents The Sound of Music for two weekends on March 18-20 and 25-27.
‘This is going to be huge,? said OHS Choir Director Chris Card.
Rodgers and Hammerstein’s ‘The Sound of Music,? one of the most beloved and timeless musicals ever written, tells the story of Maria, who has dreamed of becoming a nun ever since she was a child.
When she realizes that she isn’t making it as a nun, she leaves to become the governess of retired Austrian navel officer Captain Von Trapp’s home in Salzburg to take care of his seven children.
What comes next is a story of love and hardships in 1938 Germany between Maria and Captain that will captivate audiences of all ages.
OHS senior Molly Bruner is cast in the role of Maria, while fellow senior Adam Silorey will play Captain Von Trapp.
The Sound of Music is produced and directed by Card. while Jim Gibbons will serve as pit director. Josh Smokovitz will serve as the tech director and Bethan Angell is student producing the performances.
Last year’s performance of Annie set the standard by selling 3,000 tickets, and this year Card wants to raise the bar even higher. ‘Our goal is to exceed expectations…so this year we are going from one weekend to two weekends,? he said.
He raised it from day one by not allowing the performers to use their scripts to rehearse from the very beginning.
‘That’s a big deal because normally you bring it, learn the scene, memorize it and in a couple of weeks you have it memorized. In this case, they were expected the whole time to come with their lines and song memorized.?
‘Our whole mission is to have believable acting, so when they come, they don’t think of it as a high school production.?
Tickets are $10 for reserved seating, $7 for adults and $5 for youth and students for general admission tickets. Tickets are free for Oxford school students with a paying parent.
Performances will be on Friday, March 19 at 7 p.m.; Saturday March 20 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 25; 7 p.m. on Friday, March 26 and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday March 27.
There will be a special dessert premiere performance on Thursday, March 18 at 7 p.m. The cost is $12 and there will be no complementary student tickets for this showing.
More than 900 tickets have already been sold. To order tickets, call the ticket information hotline at (248) 969-5321 or stop by the ticket box office at the high school from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
