The 2,100-square-foot interim Independence Township Senior Center is now under construction. The 1,500-square-foot basement has been dug, walls built, and cement floor poured.
The rough in for the main floor was started this past week.
‘The entire thing should be roughed in and roofed in three weeks,? said Dave Belcher the building director and general contractor.
According to Belcher, tear down of the old building should take place in the first couple weeks of October.
‘I hope to have the seniors moved in by Thanksgiving, if everything continues to go as it is.?
‘We are very excited to have a new clean, safe, handicap accessible building, said Margaret Bartos senior center coordinator. ‘It’s the size of a modern house and paid for out of the capital expenditure. It’s not the $3 million building that we made on the ballet in November that would be paid for out of new taxes, but it’s a safe alternative.?
The Township Board voted June 5 to construct the interim center for $250,000, paid out of the general fund. DMB Building is one of the companies helping to build the center.
‘I think it’s great, it’s something they definitely need. It will be very sharp when it’s done,? said Dave Bridgewater owner of DMB building.
DMB Building has worked in Clarkston for the past 16 years. They do all aspects of construction, from new building to remodeling.
‘Sam Moraco and Dave Belcher are the two putting it (the senior center) together- they are the two most knowledgable guys in the township. They have plenty of experience,? said Bridgewater.
