Scoreboard offer sparks board debate over donations, advertising

Goodrich-An area automobile dealer has offered $15,000 for sponsorship of a new scoreboard at the Roy U. Stacey Athletic Complex.
The district policy committee has been discussing the donation and will bring the issue to the next school board meeting on Oct. 21.
Scott Bogner, district superintendent, said the policy committee will collect data on advertising with a clear and concise set of rules.
‘The school policy committee is currently working on the concept of advertising to put guidelines in place,? said Bogner.
‘With finances as they are for school districts, this is somewhat of a new area for boards to contend with. However, it’s another step to gain revenue at a time when every dollar counts.?
The new LED scoreboard will be designed to be multi-faceted to accommodate scores for soccer or football.
‘There’s new technology out there that will fit our needs,? he added.
Bogner said other groups including theater and band have needs that could be met with a sponsor.
Trade for the advertising is not new for the district.
Recently, the Meijer Foundation donated $7,500 for the purchase of a 28-foot trailer supplied by Whitmore Lake-based SLM Trailers for the 86-member Martian band. While the Martian logo, paint and decals were funded by the school, a ‘Meijer? sign was on the trailer.
In 2004 the school board OK’d a contract with Coca-Cola for dispensers in both the middle school and high school. The 10 machines dispense water and fruit juice in addition to Coke products. Terms of the $35,000 five-year deal included $20,000 up front to the school then $3,750 per year. Proceeds were to be used for a new high school marquee to be located near Hegel Road. On Sept. 22, 2005 representatives of Apex Sign Group of Flint razed the old school district sign along Hegel Road and installed a new marquee with a light emitting diode (LED) message system through an agreement with Coca-Cola Co. just before Goodrich Homecoming that year.
‘I really appreciate the board’s direction,? Bogner said on Tuesday. ‘They just don’t have dollar signs in their eyes’there’s a level of control. This is a good way to raise revenues.?
