The Oxford Board of Education unanimously approved at an organizational meeting Monday night to move their regular election date to every November beginning in 2008.
Dr. William Skilling, Superintendent for Oxford Schools, said moving the election date from May to November would be a ‘good decision.?
He said it would save the district money and boost voter turnout because November’s when general elections are traditionally held for local, state and national offices.
School board elections and millage questions could simply be added to the general election ballot.
‘You still have the option of having special elections for bond issues in May,? the superintendent told the board.
Although the meeting was considered a public hearing for the election date change, only one Oxford resident, Marilyn Schils, attended to give her opinion on the change.
‘I definitely feel that elections should be in November and not waste money that could be used for other purposes,? she said.
Treasurer Doug Myer said many other school districts hold elections in November as well and that ‘this is probably the best (move) for us.?
