Oxford Community Schools was very busy this summer.
Besides all the usual hiring of new staff and working to complete all the construction projects on time, the student services office was busy enrolling new students into the district.
According to Denise Sweat, the assistant superintendent of student services, the district had enrolled 638 students as of August 14.
Sweat said that number was just a gain of students, and did not factor in students who left the district.
‘We wouldn’t know who has left unless they sent a request for records,? she said. ‘We have had some people that have requested records, but we have not done our drops yet.?
Of the 638 students, 121 students were school of choice, and 114 had enrolled in the Oxford Virtual Academy.
According to the numbers Sweat provided, 87 students enrolled at Clear Lake, 174 students at Daniel Axford, 82 at Lakeville, 56 at Leonard, 14 at Oxford Elementary, 38 at Oxford Middle School and 73 at Oxford High School.
Sweat noted she is expecting an increase to those numbers since they last took a count on Aug. 14.
‘We have been so busy, I haven’t been able to verify new numbers,? she said. ‘There was a time where we haven’t been as busy as the last two weeks…we were updating Dr. Skilling every week from our office, and we have been too busy enrolling kids to count.?
‘I am sure they are going to go up, but I can’t even venture a guess as to how much,? she added.
Sweat added the district will not be able to get an accurate picture of how many students the district has either gained or lost until three weeks after count day, which takes place on Wednesday, Oct. 5
‘That is just a snap shot of who is in the building on that day, and then it is audited, so you don’t get the final audited number until probably about three weeks later,? she said.
