Rugby program sparks interest

Clarkston Wolfhounds rugby takes to the field with its first practice, 9 a.m., Saturday, May 1, behind Clarkston Eagles hall, 5640 Maybee Road.
“The Eagles generously allowed us to set up a field on their property,” said coach Brian Lenaghan of Springfield Township, a rugby player since college. “I love team sports. The kids learn life skills and how to work together. That translates into business and other things as they get older.”
Two players already signed up are Lenaghan’s sons, Connor and Ryan.
“I thought it was interesting, something new to learn,” said Connor, 12. “You learn teamwork and respect for other players.”
“I watched my dad play rugby, that’s how I got interested in it,” said Ryan, 9. “I really like it. You don’t have to wear pads that get in the way.”
Sponsored by Tim Hortons, the program is for boys in grades 3-12.
“The first season will be all instructional,” Brian said. “The goal is a high school team next spring.”
The sport crosstrains athetes and doesn’t interfere with football, he said.
“You have 15 guys on the field, and you need all 15 to succeed,” he said.
