To celebrate Black History Month, students at Lakeville Elementary got to jam to traditional reggae, Jamaican and African music when the West Bloomfield- based Gratitude Steel Band visited them Friday.
Students got to dance, sing and try out some unique instruments. Teachers and students even got to try break-dancing to the percussion beats.
The family group, which started in 1988, travels the world with their steel drums and bass pans singing traditional Swahili, Zulu and Yoraba dialects. They’ve performed in the West Indies, Europe and Canada. The group’s visit was sponsored by the Lakeville PTO.
