Renovated Mt. Holly opens

Groveland Twp. – Skiers hit the slopes last week at Mt. Holly, where renovations are now complete.
New this season is a remodeled lodge area, with a stone and log fireplace area, four upgraded ‘grand-style? restrooms, and a more visible entrance.
The revisions are aimed at making the facility more user-friendly for new ski and snowboard enthusiasts, said general manager Mark Tibbitts said, to eliminate the ‘hassle factor.?
‘The first-timer who’s never been skiing before needs more direction in everything from getting to the parking lot to the snow.?
The rental department continues to offer instruction in getting the right equipment. For beginners, Tibbitts recommends taking ski or snowboard lessons.
A free ski-check area is also available.
‘You just walk up to the gate, hand them your snowboard, and get a tag. We guarantee its safety,? he said. Equipment can be locked if left in accessible areas.
Despite being open last weekend, it’s still early to count on the weather, says Tibbitts.
‘Call ahead,? he said. ‘We need cold weather to build a base.?
Mt. Holly is open to all ages. Tibbitts has seen everyone from 2-year-olds with their parents to skiers in their 80s, he said.
‘It’s great physical activity. If you live in the state of Michigan, you need to get into winter sports of any kind, because snow is something that happens every year here. It’s part of the beauty of our state.?
Mt. Holly is located at 13536 S. Dixie Hwy. in Groveland Township.
