Q&A in Goodrich

Goodrich – How many dozen are in seven gross? Who would be last to succeed a U.S. President? What occurred in America after the treaty of Versailles?
These were just a few of the hundreds of questions asked during an eight minute round of the Quiz Bowl tournament, held at Goodrich Middle School last week. (For those playing along, the answers were: 84, Secretary of Education and the New Deal.)
Approximately 100 students from 16 different schools in Genesee County made the journey by bus to GMS for the second of six matches scheduled.
Questions were fired by moderators one after another while students hit the buzzer as fast as they could to give answers.
Goodrich Middle School Science Teacher Linda Ross, who helped organize the event, said, ‘Students don’t get the questions ahead of time. The questions come from Gordon Winther. He is a retired teacher and educator who does academic consulting.?
Ross said students who participate in Quiz Bowl get to know other students. ‘They really like going and meeting kids from other schools. It’s much more personal than football, where the players don’t even get a chance to talk to the other players.?
Quiz Bowl has been a popular event for Genesee County Schools for more than 20 years. However, it was just reinstated this year after a few years of being shut down.
‘This event is so much fun, I am loving it,? said Ross. ‘Students gain so much confidence. When a student tells me they aren’t smart enough to participate, I tell them that’s just because you don’t know everything about everything. Everybody has their own special interests.?
Ross said she especially likes Quiz Bowl because after the six matches the students participate in, everyone gets a medal. ‘When the kids hear they will get a medal for participating, they get really excited. Trophies are also given for teams in the top ten and awards are also given for good citizenship,? she said.
