Powers Catholic eliminates Goodrich netters

Close, but no cigar.
Goodrich’s volleyball team advanced to the finals of their Class B district matchup at Linden Feb. 25, but the Martians lost to Powers Catholic 25-17, 25-14, 25-15 in the district final.
The Martians ended their season with an overall record of 16-18-2.
Goodrich defeated Linden 25-17, 25-11, 25-19 and Southwestern 25-16, 25-22, 25-18 to advance to the district finals.
Tara Garman went 18-of-21 serving for the Martians during the district tournament, and also went 143-of-160 receiving with 28 digs and 107-of-111 hitting with 62 kills and 18 blocks.
Alyssa Bertrand was 33-of-34 serving with four aces, 26 digs, and 75 assists, while Julie Owen had nine aces, 47 digs, and 17 kills for the Martians.
On the heels of a 0-2 performance at the Genesee Area Conference Red Division Tournament Feb. 19 at Goodrich, the Martians lost to Durand 20-25, 18-25, 25-21, 13-25 in a Feb. 23 matchup.
Garman led the Martians with 29 digs, 24 kills, and nine blocks, and was 13-of-14 serving, 15-of-17 passing, and 50-of-52 attacking. Bertrand was 111-of-118 setting with 40 assists, and was 27-of-29 atacking, while Owen had 30 digs and was 28-of-29 passing.
Other Goodrich contributors were Katie Birch (26-of-31 attacking) and Ellen Nothhelfer (19-of-21 passing).
At the league tournament Feb. 19, it was two-and-out for the Martians, as they lost to Mt. Morris 22-25, 21-25 and to Montrose 23-25, 25-16, 13-15. The Martians wound up in fifth place at the tournament and finished fourth in the GAC Red with a 9-4 record in league play.
Garman was 45-of-51 attacking and 12-of-12 serving with 19 digs and 25 kills, while Bertrand was 63-of-63 setting, 18-of-18 serving and 13-of-15 attacking. Owen had 22 digs and eight kills and was 16-of-19 serving, 25-of-26 passing and 39-of-44 attacking.
Other notable Goodrich performers were Birch (30-of-32 attacking), Jessica Morgan (26-of-28 passing and 12-of-14 serving) and Nothhelfer (13-of-15 serving, 13-of-15 passing, and 10-of-12 attacking with 22 digs).
