Oxford Township is celebrating its 24th Annual Road Beautification Project Spring Clean Up on Saturday, May 20, and they’re looking for volunteers.
Bags will be provided at the drop-off site at Stony Lake Park (1395 Lapeer Rd.) for volunteers to collect debris and garbage along Oxford’s beautiful roads.
Items like old metal refrigerators, stoves, air conditioners and water heaters can be dropped off at the park, as well as metal auto parts weighing no more than 40 pounds.
Don’t forget metal furniture, like desks and lawn furniture (with non-metal parts removed), poles, railings, shelves, pots and pans can also be dropped off, but remember to drain all oil and gas first.
Items that won’t be accepted are plastics, telephones, hair dryers, concrete and TV’s.
Deanna Burns, Oxford Township’s deputy supervisor, said the township is looking for a $20 donation for items containing Freon.
Volunteers (individuals, scouts, service groups, etc.) for the roadside service can sign up to clean a specific road if they wish. ‘We get a lot of people who have to do community service,? Burns said.
And don’t worry about going hungry, because a continental breakfast and lunch will be served at the Stony Lake picnic pavilion from 8:30 a.m.to 3 p.m., courtesy of donations from the community.
‘They allow us with their donations to put on a really nice luncheon,? Burns said.
Last year the township collected over 350 yards of mixed trash and scrap metal, including 26 appliances with Freon, and had over 100 volunteers.
Burns said the Spring Clean Up costs the township approximately $7,900.
