The Rotary Club of Oxford is no stranger in helping those in the community, so it came as no surprise when they decided to sponsor a new Rotary Club in Lake Orion after a nine-year absence.
Last Wednesday was the Lake Orion Sunrise Rotary Club’s first meeting at King of Kings Lutheran Church in Lake Orion.
Provisional acting president of the Lake Orion club, Roger Bentlage, said the 7:15 a.m. meeting, which featured speaker Don Chisholm, 6380 past Rotary District Governor from 2003-04, drew 15 people. Five of whom were perspective members.
Bentlage, who has been a Rotarian for 33 years, said the Lake Orion club needs at least 20 members to become an official chartered club of Rotary International. Until then, they were granted ‘provisional status? to operate and meet.
Oxford Rotary member Janet McPeek said she and other Oxford club members are ‘proud? of the work Rotary does in the local community and around the world.
‘Now, Lake Orion, with so many people who are willing to serve others, will again have a Rotary Club as part of the community,? she said.
Bentlage said the Lake Orion club plans to meet every Wednesday at 7:15-8:30 a.m. at the church because it’s a good time frame for those who work in the community to attend.
‘The church lends itself to this kind of meeting because it’s more personable, as opposed to a restaurant,? he said.
The first goal of the Lake Orion Sunrise Rotary Club is to develop more members. Once that’s done, Bentlage said its members will shape and define the way they want to run the club.
‘As it designs itself we will accomplish projects in the community, as well as on a national and international scale,? Bentlage said.
