During the month of March, elementary students in Oxford read a total of 894,746.5 minutes, and as soon as Daniel Axford’s minutes are totaled after Spring Break, it may even surpass one million.
Each school put their own creative spin on how to celebrate March is Reading Month.
Lakeville Elementary decorated all of their hallways for their Wizard of Oz theme, complete with a haunted forest, a field of poppies and even a life-size cut-out of Dorothy Gale, with principal Sharon Karpinski’s face appropriately attached.
The school’s goal was to read at least 20 minutes a night. They ended with an extrodinary 469,960 minutes total.
Leonard Elementary dedicated their month-long reading efforts to the infamous Dr. Seuss, who’s ‘Cat in the Hat? book turned 50 this year.
At the end of the month, each class got to act out their favorite Dr. Seuss book at their Reading Theater Cafe. Principal Joyce Brasington even dressed up as ‘The Cat in the Hat? during the plays.
The school’s goal was to read 110,000 minutes, to which they read 110,400.
At Clear Lake Elementary, students were Racing to Read with their race-car themed reading month.
Their goal was to read 160,000 minutes, but the Clear Lake students far surpassed their goal by reading 314,386.5 minutes.
