The Oxford High School Cheerleading program got together on Monday, Dec. 14 to do some shopping and spread some holiday cheer for two families they adopted this Christmas.
More than 35 girls spent the evening at Great Lakes Crossing shopping off of a ‘wish list? that was provided for them by The Adopt-A-Family program through St. Joseph’s Church in Lake Orion.
Co-Varsity Cheerleading Coach Melissa McClain organized the activity for the team.
‘This event is designed to be fun for the girls, but more importantly a way to give back to the community,? said McClain.
Each player and coach gave money in addition to the use of funds from the fund-raising account.
‘With the state of the economy, we understand that for many families Christmas will be tougher this year and we wanted to make sure that at least for some, Christmas morning was full of presents under the tree,? add McClain.
She would like to thank Great Lakes Crossing, Bass Pro Shops, Oshkosh, TJ Maxx and Marshalls for being so willing to help the girls provide for the families.
‘We were overwhelmed with the generosity of other shoppers and store employees at Great Lakes Crossings. Many people just standing in the checkout line gave money to our girls to help towards their purchases,? she said.
Because of the success of the program, McClain hopes that this can become an annual Christmas tradition for the program.
