The Oxford varsity competitive cheer team pulled together for a 599.9-point second place win at their Flint Metro League tournament last Wednesday, which should’ve been a first place win, according to the coach.
During their first round, the girls received a 14-point penalty from a judge for a certain jump they were told they performed incorrectly.
‘It was a jump we have been performing the same exact way for years and (we) never have been given a warning for in the past,? said Coach Alanna Stockley. ‘It is frustrating to the girls because they have worked so hard and a safety judge gives them a penalty for something that has never been ‘wrong? before.?
The tournament was the first of two, the next one will be Feb. 2. The two scores from each tournament will be combined to determine a league winner.
On Saturday, the girls competed against Armada and again placed second ? only 1.6 points behind first place winner Davison.
‘We had our best second round we have had in two years, scoring 182.1,? Stockley said. ‘We are pleased with that, but we will continue to improve.?
Stockley attributes a few minor mistakes and a fall as to why they placed second and said the team will be fixing that before their competition at Davison on Jan. 27.
