Two Goodrich wrestlers earned the right to call themselves the best in the Genesee Area Conference at the Feb. 10 league tournament.
Sophomores Mark Weber (112) and Grant Overcashier (130) won first place in their respective weight classes at the tournament, helping the Martians finish in fourth place out of 10 teams at the tournament.
The Martians finished with a team total of 128, just one point behind third-place Durand. Goodrich, which had nine wrestlers place in the tournament, also clinched fourth place overall in the league with their finish.
Montrose clinched the outright league championship with a total of 213.5 points, outdistancing second-place New Lothrop (190).
Weber remained undefeated on the season, improving to 45-0 by pinning Montrose’s Shane Henry in the 112-lb. finals. Weber had a bye through the first and second rounds of the 112-lb. weight class.
Meanwhile, Overcashier (37-11) earned the 130-lb. championship by pinning Bentley’s Ryan Coron in one minute in their championship match. Overcashier started the tournament by pinning Lake Fenton’s Jake Maintland in seven seconds, and then earned a 17-5 major decision against New Lothrop’s Kyle Trent.
Two more Goodrich wrestlers, sophomore Nick Gatchell (135) and freshman Kyler Elsworth (152) earned second-place finishes by advancing to the championship matches in their respective brackets. Gatchell (32-17) pinned Mt. Morris? Josh Tabit in 1:09 and won a 6-0 decision against Durand’s Chad Burton before being pinned by New Lothrop’s Matt Bishop in 5:02 in their title matchup.
Elsworth (37-13) started out the tournament by pinning Durand’s Dan Edmonson in 3:38, then won a 6-2 decision against Byron’s Nate Kirby before losing a 3-1 overtime decision to New Lothrop’s Ryan Confer in the 152-lb. finals.
Four Goodrich wrestlers earned third-place finishes in the tournament: freshman David Garr (103), senior Brian Grzecki (112), freshman Drew Weil (125) and freshman Nick Lovell (140). Sophomore Brad Armstrong (145) placed fourth for the Martians.
