Become a resident of ‘Our Town? later this month when Goodrich High School theatre brings the Thornton Wilder American classic to the stage.
In his 15th year as GHS drama director, Steve Mitchell mirrors the recently produced off-Broadway production by placing the audience on stage, in seating just inches away from actors.
The intimate, contemporary costumed experience allows the audience to carefully become part of ‘Our Town,? said Mitchell.
The recently revived off-Broadway play is currently the most produced high school theatre production in the country, according to the Educational Theatre Association.
‘The ‘Our Town? production is a first for me,? said Mitchell. ‘There’s just so many good plays to do’there’s really no need to repeat any. We’ve updated ‘Our Town? while keeping the language of the play the same. There are very few props’two tables and four chairs’and playgoers will be a part of production.?
‘Our Town? is set in the fictional town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire at the beginning of the 20th century in the northeast United States.
The 1938 winner of the Pulitzer Prize for drama, the play is primarily about the daily life, love, marriage and death of ‘everyday? people. The unique presentation style creates a new sense of relevance to a story and a script familiar to many. Wilder depicts themes about the cycle of life that continue today. The play ‘Our Town? tells the story of two simple families, the Gibbs and the Webbs, living in the town of Grover’s Corners. The play expresses milestones such as new life, first love, long lasting love and the impact of death.
