Organizations award college scholarships to local athletes

A golf outing held in August is helping several Brandon and Goodrich students attend college in 2005-06.
The 15th annual Goodrich-Brandon scholarship golf outing was held Aug. 9, with 116 participants. Each year, three Brandon and three Goodrich students receive one-year, $800 college scholarships with the money raised from the event.
‘We give out everything we take in each year and give it to a new group of students,? scholarship coordinator Tom Gordon said.
The three Brandon students that received scholarships from the golf outing were Jackie Back, Meridith Dura, and Jordan Wingett, while the three Goodrich recipients were Jared Farner, Charlie Richards, and Ben Richards.
According to Gordon, the golf outing was originally started by Dale Ferguson, whose wife was a teacher in the Goodrich school district. He also said several businesses in Brandon and Goodrich lend financial support to the tournament.
The scholarship is a one year, non renewable scholarship. The scholarship selection committee is comprised of the high school principals, athletic directors, two varsity coaches, two teachers, and two counselors each from Goodrich and Brandon High Schools.
In order to be eligible for the scholarship, candidates must:
‘earn a 3.0 grade point average.
‘be a graduating senior from Goodrich/Brandon High School.

‘if not selected from the golf team, then they may be selected from another fall sport team.
‘be of good character and good citizenship as judged by the selection committee.
‘have been involved or currently involved in other extracurricular activities at school or the community.
‘must have proof of enrollment in college for the 2005-06 school year.
